Skola Study and Work - Exeter
According to Lonely Planet. www.exeter.gov.uk/visiting
"With a touch of buzzy, big city atmosphere, a large student population and a thriving arts scene, Exeter is one of the liveliest cities in the southwest. The city's long heritage means there are plenty of monuments and historical attractions to occupy at least a day's sightseeing, and the excellent selection of bars, cafes and restaurants make Exeter a vibrant place to be after dark."
The School
Located next to the High Street in the city centre, the school is well-placed for all amenities including the shops, cafes, bus and railway stations, cathedral and mosque. We have 5 classrooms in our Longbrook Street premises and 3 more classrooms in our Courtyard annexe, just around the corner. The school in Longbrook Street has a computer suite and free WIFI access.
Teachers
All our teachers are university graduates who are qualified and experienced in teaching English as a foreign language. With a background of teaching both in the UK and abroad, our teachers have a genuine interest and understanding of what is required to enable students to adapt successfully to life, language and culture in the UK. Working to high professional standards, our teachers form a close and dedicated team who support students both inside and outside the classroom.
Finding a Job
Many of our students do paid work once they arrive in the UK. EU students have no restrictions on the hours they can work and students on a student visa can work up to 10 hours a week. If you are not sure if you are allowed to work, please check the status of your visa with the office. The minimum wage for workers over the age of 18 is £5.52 per hour (October 2008). As Exeter is a centre for tourism there are opportunities for work in restaurants, bars and cafés and other students work as cleaners or shop assistants. We can help students by recommending websites and employment agencies, providing references and checking contracts.
Social life
Very important! With a good mix of ages, nationalities and interests our students tend to be a very sociable crowd. There are informal outings to local clubs, pubs and cafes and the school sometimes organises evening trips to theatres, cinemas, bowling centres and other leisure activities. Regular football matches take place against students from other schools on Wednesday afternoons and every weekend there is an excursion to local places of interest or beauty – see www.tobytours.co.uk (an extra fee, usually around £20 is payable for the excursions)
